Barbershop music is separated into four parts:

TENORS sing the highest notes in the harmony.

LEADS sing the melody,

BARITONES sing the middle harmony,

BASSES sing the lowest harmony.

In women's barbershop, soprano singers will generally take the tenor or lead parts, altos take the lead or baritone parts, and mezzo-altos would take the bass part. Baritone is often the most difficult part to sing in barbershop, because this harmony is squeezed into a very tight range of notes and harmonies.
